During the Battle of Peleliu in September 1944, Marines Stanley Parks, left, and Randolph Peters of the 1st Marine Division pose with their weapons before moving forward to engage Japanese forces. Parks carries a flamethrower, a critical weapon for clearing the caves and heavily fortified positions that covered the island. Flamethrower operators faced extraordinary danger, often having to move within close range of enemy positions while carrying their heavy equipment.
