Lt. Karl Soule, the division’s photographic officer, examines a captured Japanese Type 96 light machine gun fitted with a bayonet on the east bank of Alligator Creek, Guadalcanal, on August 21, 1942. Nearby are the Japanese positions used to establish a base of fire in support of attacks across the sandbar. American positions can be seen on the opposite side of the creek. A fallen Japanese soldier lies near the captured weapon, apparently killed during the fighting.
