Marine Ospreys Train in the Philippines

U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Ospreys operating with Marine Rotational Force–Darwin are sharpening their ability to operate from remote and austere locations across the Philippines, reinforcing the Corps' growing focus on dispersed operations throughout the Indo-Pacific.

The training places Marine aviation crews in environments where established air bases and extensive support infrastructure may not be available — exactly the type of conditions Marines could face during future operations across the vast distances of the Pacific.

Operating Far From Home

The Ospreys are part of Marine Rotational Force–Darwin 26, the Marine force deployed rotationally through northern Australia.

During the 2026 rotation, Marines have repeatedly moved between Australia and locations throughout the Philippines, testing their ability to rapidly transport personnel, equipment and supplies across long distances.

The MV-22B is particularly valuable for those missions.

Combining the vertical takeoff and landing capability of a helicopter with much of the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft, the Osprey allows Marines to move forces between islands and remote locations without relying exclusively on traditional runways.

That capability is increasingly important as the Marine Corps prepares for operations across the island chains of the Indo-Pacific.

Training for Expeditionary Operations

Rather than operating solely from established military installations, Marine aviation units are practicing how to support aircraft from temporary and expeditionary locations.

That includes moving personnel and equipment into austere sites, establishing aviation support operations and keeping aircraft moving with a relatively small footprint.

The concept supports the Marine Corps' broader effort to make its aviation forces more mobile and less dependent upon large, permanent bases.

During previous training in the Philippines this year, Marine Ospreys demonstrated that mobility by transporting troops and equipment hundreds of miles across the southern Philippines.

In May, MV-22Bs from Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 (VMM-268) transported a multinational force to Balabac Island during Exercise Balikatan 2026. Marines, Philippine forces and Australian troops then secured Balabac Airfield during a simulated expeditionary operation.

The squadron also worked with Marine logistics units to deliver supplies and support troops operating in geographically dispersed locations.

Built for the Pacific

The geography of the Indo-Pacific presents an enormous logistical challenge.

Unlike operations centered around large land bases, forces operating across the Pacific may need to move between hundreds of islands separated by significant stretches of ocean.

The Marine Corps is preparing for that environment through concepts such as Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations, or EABO.

Under the concept, relatively small Marine units could establish temporary positions, perform a mission and relocate before an adversary can effectively target them.

Aircraft such as the MV-22B could be critical to keeping those dispersed Marines supplied and moving.

MRF-D 26 has already tested movements comparable to the approximately 1,600 nautical miles separating Darwin and the Philippines, using both MV-22B Ospreys and KC-130J Super Hercules aircraft.

A More Capable Rotational Force

The 2026 deployment also represents an important milestone for Marine Rotational Force–Darwin.

In May, MRF-D 26 became the first Darwin rotation certified as a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force since the rotational deployment began in 2011.

The certification demonstrated the force's ability to respond to a variety of missions, including crisis response, casualty evacuation, humanitarian assistance and expeditionary combat operations.

Marine aviation was central to that certification.

Ospreys transported troops, conducted external-lift missions, supported tactical recovery exercises and delivered supplies to forces operating from austere locations.

Preparing for a Different Battlefield

The Marine Corps' continued Osprey training in the Philippines reflects a larger transformation taking place across the service.

Future Marine aviation operations may not always revolve around large airfields filled with aircraft, maintenance facilities and permanent infrastructure.

Instead, aircraft could operate from a network of temporary locations scattered across enormous distances.

That requires Marines to move quickly, operate with fewer resources and keep aircraft flying in places never designed to support sustained aviation operations.

For the Marines and Ospreys of Marine Rotational Force–Darwin, the islands of the Philippines provide an ideal place to practice exactly that.

The aircraft may be familiar.

The way the Marine Corps plans to use them is continuing to evolve.
