
Dronebuster Gives Marines a Handheld Defense Against Enemy Drones
On July 15, 2026, Marines with Headquarters and Service Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, gathered at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, to evaluate a weapon designed for a rapidly changing battlefield: the Dronebuster handheld counter-drone system.
Dronebuster gives an individual Marine the ability to detect, track and electronically disrupt small unmanned aircraft systems.
Instead of destroying a drone with gunfire or explosives, a Marine points the compact device toward the aircraft and interferes with its radio-frequency control link or satellite-navigation signals. Depending on the type of drone and how it is programmed, the interference may cause it to hover, land, return to its launch point or lose control.
The Camp Pendleton demonstration took place in a controlled training environment. Marines were evaluating the technology rather than responding to an operational drone threat.
The importance of the system, however, extends far beyond a single demonstration.
The war in Ukraine has shown how inexpensive commercial drones can threaten troops, vehicles, artillery positions, command posts and supply networks. Fast first-person-view drones can locate and attack targets that would once have been difficult or expensive to reach.
Those lessons have pushed the U.S. military to develop layered defenses against small unmanned aircraft. Electronic-warfare systems such as Dronebuster can disrupt a drone before it reaches its target, while rifles, shotguns and other kinetic weapons provide another line of defense against aircraft that get too close.
Counter-drone technology is especially important for logistics units.
Supply convoys, maintenance facilities, command posts and support areas may operate behind the front lines, but they are no longer safely removed from enemy observation or attack. A hostile force equipped with inexpensive drones can locate supply movements, identify gathering points and strike critical equipment.
A portable system allows Marines to respond without waiting for a larger vehicle-mounted or fixed-site counter-drone weapon. That mobility could prove essential when protecting convoys, temporary positions and widely dispersed units.
The Marine Corps is working to make drone and counter-drone operations a permanent part of its training and doctrine.
In July 2026, the service established the Marine Corps Robotics Integration Group at Twentynine Palms, California. The organization is intended to help standardize training, doctrine and curriculum involving small drones, robotics and counter-drone operations.
Dronebuster is one part of that broader effort. Newer versions offer expanded capabilities, while the Marine Corps continues to examine defenses against autonomous aircraft, coordinated drone swarms, fixed-wing systems and drones launched from other aircraft.
The Camp Pendleton demonstration offered a small but revealing glimpse of a much larger transformation. Marines are preparing for a battlefield where control of the low-altitude sky may be just as important as control of the ground beneath it.
